Calthorpe Motorcycles

Calthorpe cars were made in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, England from 1904 to 1932. The company started out as a Birmingham bicycle maker run by George W. Hands who, in 1904, made his first motor car, a 10 hp four cylinder model. Calthorpe was primarily a producer of cars, but also made motorcycles. Originally, Calthorpe was a bicycle maker in Birmingham. The company was founded by George Hands.

They recieved there early engines from other manufacturers, but after 1925, Calthorpe started making their own 348 overhead valve and 500 overhead cam engines. In 1938, Calthorpe went briefly went into liquidation, new owners moved the company to Bristol, but the factory was requisitioned during the war. The Calthorpe name was briefly revived in 1947. About 5000 cars were made in the post war period, pre war production is uncertain. A very few cars have survived.
