Norton Motorcycles

Norton Motorcycles was founded in 1898, by James Norton in Birmingham. The first Norton motorcycle was manufactured in 1902. By 1907, Norton had won the twin-cylinder class in the first Isle of Man TT race.

By 1909, Norton Motorcycles were for sale at Harrods. In 1916 the Norton logo appears. In 1925, James Norton died.

As part of the War effort, over 100,000 Nortons are manufactured for the military. In 1953, Norton was sold to Associated Motorcycles (AMC).

In 1962, the Birmingham factory closed and production shifed to London. In 1966, AMC collapses and is reformed as Norton-Villiers part of Manganese Bronze. The Commando appears in 1967. In 1971 the Street Scrambler and Hi Rider make their appearance.

In 1973, Norton-Villiers-Triumph (NVT) is formed. The last Commando rolls off the manufacturing line in 1976.

In 1988, Norton re-emerged as Norton Motors International.
