YAMAHA MOTORCYCLE HISTORY

Yamaha was founded by Torakusu Yamaha in 1988 originally as Yamaha Musical Instrument Company. Torakusu Yamaha was a clock maker. It went on to become the biggest piano maker in the world. After the war, Yamaha expanded into Motorcycles. The first, in 1954 was the 125cc, single cylinder two-stroke YA-1 Motorcycle.

The Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was officially founded on July 1, 1955. It had 274 employees, and manufactured around 200 units per month.

By 1957, Yamaha had started production of the YD1 model. Yamaha became the first Japanese maker to enter the international race arena in 1958.

In 1968, Yamaha released the DT-1, an off-road motorcycle.

In 1982, the Number 20 million Yamaha Motorcycle rolled off the production line. Yamaha Motor Co. is a separate corporation, no longer a direct subsidiary of the Yamaha Corporation.
